Bungay Road Safety Petition

Bungay_HGVs_2.jpg

Bungay Labour propose that Bungay residents petition Suffolk County Council with the following actions:

  1. That Councillor David Ritchie starts the process that leads to a permanent restriction on HGV traffic passing northbound through our town centre

  2. Reinstate at least one controlled safety crossing to St. Mary’s Street for the benefit of those with disabilities

  3. Arrange for a comprehensive review of all speed restrictions

  4. Remove confusing decorative paving across road outside of Wightmans store.

Petition organised by Bungay Labour candidates, Sue Collins & Craig Trickett.

What should be of more concern is that these “Unforeseen circumstances” were NOT unforeseen! The question should be asked, quite loudly, why the concerns were ignored to begin with!

1. HGV traffic has been an on-going issue for years! WHY on earth is it STILL an issue? This simply should have been dealt with many years ago. It was painfully obvious that the Bungay one way system would have no effect whatsoever on the issue of HGV traffic through the town. Why would it?

2 & 3. While the disability issue is obviously a concern, it is, sadly, almost laughable that; “No concerns were raised at the removal of the controlled crossing". Again, serious questions need to be asked of those involved in that report, because it is nonsense.

It’s also worth noting that anyone who actually knows Bungay will testify that speeding was already an issue. But at least the pelican crossing and older layout actually help to provide a measure of control.

Who in their right mind removes a pelican crossing from outside a school?

In fact, an issue not mentioned that contributes even more to the hazard is that now there is parking opposite the school that makes entering and exiting Priory Lane very awkward, more so because traffic is speeding more than it did in the old layout.

Yeah, lets remove the controlled crossing outside the school AND allow parking to obscure everyone view while making the road to the school more liable to faster traffic – brilliantly thought out guys!

It is also worth noting that as with the high level of dreadful, inappropriate parking that goes on, there is NO regular deterrent which would almost certainly reduce speeding traffic! An amazing new invention that perhaps the planners weren’t aware of – Simple flashing “slow down” signs!

4. Again, EVERYONE locally could see the problem coming at the Wightman’s end, it was painfully obvious. As someone who has already been one of those ‘near misses’, serious questions MUST be asked of those responsible. The whole Wightman’s roundabout end of town is a confusing and absurd fiasco.

Did the planners actually ever come and see the result of what they did?

Many local concerns were brushed aside but what is so worrying is that these are basic, common sense issues and I repeat that serious questions need to be asked of those responsible.

Definitely regular policing of parking bays as many non disabled using disabled bays. Some people parking all day in 30 min waiting zones notably Owls for one in Cross Street. Illegal parking outside hairdressers in St Mary’s Street and in loading only bays. Please NO speed humps in St Mary’s Street as they DO damage vehicles and I for one will never shop in Bungay again if this happens

Please make the resolving the drainage issues on St.Mary’s St. and removal of the dangerous brick road markings on the roundabout a priority.

Although I agree with the one way system in the town, it hasn’t actually improved anythign other than the aesthetics of the town. Parking is still an issue, speeding is sill an issue, HGV’s are an issue, crossings are and issue . . . . . . .
