Candidate for Oulton Broad
Born in Hull 1944, son of a fish merchant. Passed 11+ and went to one of Hull's good state grammar schools. Studied Zoology at Durham University and got a job as a Fisheries Scientist at the Fish Lab (CEFAS) in 1968 finally becoming a Principal Scientific Officer. Left the Civil Service in 1988 and did a PGCE before taking a job teaching Science at Benjamin Britten High School in 1991. Retired in 1998 and initially spent my spare time learning flute then bassoon and singing in local choirs and playing in amateur orchestras. Sailed a yacht (which I restored and maintain myself) round Britain in 2011. Keen on DIY home maintenance, cycling and hill-walking as well as sailing. Took up bee-keeping in 2014. I have been campaigning for the Labour Party since 2012, helping to create a fairer society and hoping to improve the handsome town of Lowestoft, particularly its traffic and flood defences. Have been on various committees, including Waveney Sinfonia and Pakefield Singers also other groups, doing the job of chairman, or publicity and website manager. Currently secretary of Waveney Beekeepers Group and website manager for Community Light and Woodbridge Orchestras.
I have two sons of my own (now adult) and I have helped bring up six other youngsters in two subsequent relationships. Carol Skinner is my partner of 17 years and we live in South Lowestoft.
