Sonia Valerie Barker has been chosen as the Labour candidate for Waveney for the 2017 General Election on 8 June.

Sonia and Labour will be working hard to overturn Peter Aldous' marginal 2408 majority.

Sonia is Leader of the Waveney Labour Opposition Group on Waveney District Council. She is currently the Waveney District Councillor for Pakefield and has also served as Suffolk County Councillor for the Pakefield Division, during which she was Opposition Spokesperson for Education and Skills.

Sonia has lived in Lowestoft for 30 years where she has taught at local high schools in both Lowestoft and Beccles and worked for the NHS. She is married and has a daughter.

Sonia said: 'It is really important that someone who really knows the area and the needs of local residents can represent it in Westminster. Through my political career and my work as a teacher I have always sought to champion the interests of young people and everyone throughout Waveney.

'Through thousands of doorstep conversations I know how important the Lake Lothing third crossing is to Waveney: under a Labour government it will be built. I will also fight hard for Waveney's health and education services, care for the elderly and housing.'
